SWINDON Harriers’ Matt Woodward is looking forward to the summer season with great relish after winding up the best indoors campaign of his career.

Following his 1500m win at the Welsh Senior Championships and then a big PB of 4mins 13.66secs at the Ayo Falola Dream Mile, the 28-year-old Harrier returned to London’s Lee Valley Stadium to clock a lifetime best of 1min 53.7secs.

“I’m really happy to have run faster across 800m than ever before, let alone just indoors!” said Woodward, who moves to second in the 2023 south west rankings.

“I surprised myself but thought there would be something special in the tank after some really strong results.

“It is a really solid place to build upon for the summer, so I’m looking forward to getting a good training block in now and letting loose on the track in May.”

Woodward wasn’t the only Harrier to impress at Lee Valley. Fletcher Hart - who is coached by John Dill - ran a scorching time of 2:02.66, which was an indoor PB and only 0.7secs outside his outdoor best set last summer.

Alex Williams, who is also in Dill’s coaching group, produced a super PB over 800m with 2:08.70, carving over four seconds from last summer’s effort of 2:12.98, while Arthur Widdows matched his PB with 2:10.32.

Of the four girls running the 800m, the quickest time came from Faith Herring with 2:31.48, just dipping inside her 2022 summer PB of 2:31.6. Eleanor Harris carved 10 seconds off her 2022 PB with 2:42.35 in what was her first race indoors.

Sisters Meredith and Lowri Prosser - coached by mum Kay - were also racing indoors for the first time, with Meredith clocking 2:38.70 and Lowri 2:50.77. The third sister, Carys, who with Meredith is coached by Bryan Clinton, celebrated her first race indoors with a PB of 5:44.9, clipping a second off her 2022 best.

Also in the 1500m, Carley Lainton smashed her PB by 10 seconds with 5:03 and will surely go sub five minutes this summer.

Sprinter Tye Leo-Stroud, who is coached by Tony Jackson, continued his comeback with another PB and club U20s record as he improved to 7.39secs at the Newham & Essex Beagles Sprint Series.
