TOWN midfielder Craig Easton admits his County Ground future is still firmly up in the air as he reflects on the most “frustrating” season of his career to date.

But the 30-year-old insists he would love to prolong his stay in Wiltshire beyond the end of the current campaign.

After being an almost ever-present last term, the midfielder has only made 15 starts this time round in a season interrupted by injury and loss of form.

And, out of contract in the summer, he knows it means a nervous wait to find out if boss Danny Wilson sees him as part of the future at SN1.

“The manager picks the team he thinks is going to win games, and you’ve got to understand that as a footballer,” said Easton. “It’s one of the most frustrating seasons I’ve had. For myself, to play so little games it has been hard.

“In pre-season I picked up an injury and then just recently I thought I might be able to get a look back in and got injured again. Sometimes you have those kind of seasons as footballers, but that’s just football and I’ve been in the game long enough to understand that.

“In an ideal world I would have liked to have been out there doing more for Swindon on the pitch this season, but it hasn’t happened.

“The gaffer has said he wants to talk about (contracts and futures) once everything is sorted out with the club, and that’s fair enough because the most important thing is League One safety.

“We will see what happens after that. I would delighted to stay here but it’s not in my hands at the moment.”

The Scot has featured on the substitutes’ bench for the past three games - his first action since January - and Easton is hopeful of remaining involved so he can make a good impression in Town’s final fixtures.

“It’s hard because if you haven’t been involved in recent games then I guess it wouldn’t surprise you (to not be offered a new deal),” admitted the former Leyton Orient man.

“But recently I’ve been on the bench and having a sniff of it, so hopefully I can get involved in a few of the games that are left and show what I can do in training and reserve games.

“I was delighted with last season - it was probably the most I have played in recent years. But this season has been the exact opposite for one reason or another and it’s been disappointing.

“I’ve just got to wait and see what he says to me. It’s a personal thing between me and the manager, but it’s got to wait until the main bit of business is sorted out, which is getting the club to safety.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I would love to stay longer if it were at all possible.”
