SIMON Cox will not be joining Leicester City this summer, after the Championship outfit pulled out of the running to snare Town’s prolific striker.

The Foxes had a bid for the 32-goal hitman rejected last month and seemed determined to land their target as reports suggested a fresh offer was imminent.

But sources close to the Foxes told the Advertiser that Leicester’s chiefs have become frustrated at Cox’s apparent lack of interest in a switch to the Walkers Stadium, and appear unwilling to take their interest any further.

After Town chairman Andrew Fitton announced his valuation of Cox at £2.5million earlier this week, Leicester chief executive Lee Hoos hit back, insisting: “That is pretty steep for a League One player.

“We know where we need to shore up, but we are trying to get things done within reason.

“It is not a case of having an unlimited amount of money, market conditions are tight and we are trying to do the best we can with it.”

The 22-year-old’s performances against Nigel Pearson’s side last season – including a superb goalscoring display at the Walkers Stadium in February – prompted Leicester’s chase for the former Reading youngster.

However, Cox has always made no secret of his willingness to remain based at his Reading home, and it seems he wouldn’t favour a move to the East Midlands.

Meanwhile, Town have confirmed the capture of goalkeeping coach George Wood.

The Advertiser exclusively revealed yesterday that Danny Wilson was chasing the Hartlepool man, and Swindon have announced the former Scottish international will take up his new employment at the County Ground at the start of pre-season training later this month.

Meanwhile, the Advertiser understands Town will complete the capture of new assistant manager Peter Shirtliff next week.

The former Sheffield Wednesday defender, who played alongside Swindon boss Wilson at Hillsborough, left his post with Tranmere earlier this month.

Rovers announced he was on his way to the County Ground, but Town have so far refused to comment on the speculation.

However, it is believed Shirtliff will be in place as Wilson’s number two inside the next seven days.
