GORDON Greer has urged Sean Morrison to stay put at the County Ground for now, believing a proper League One education will stand the teenager in good stead for his eventual move up the footballing ladder.

The 18-year-old defender headed Town’s winner against Southampton on Tuesday night to cap another mature performance, which will only serve to increase the number of top flight scouts tracking his every pass and tackle.

Youth team graduate Morrison, whose contract expires next summer, was the subject of close-season interest from Celtic and Everton, but his captain insists Wiltshire is currently the best place for him to learn his trade.

“Sean is a really good player who just needs to keep improving,” Greer told the Advertiser.

“In football there are a lot of young kids who come up who are very talented but just gradually peter out of the game.

“But Sean has got a lot of ambition, the will to work hard and the desire to learn. And as a footballer that’s one of the most important things you can have.

“Sean has it and you don’t know where he could end up.

“I think it’s important for him to realise that we are playing at a good standard and the league is a tough one this year.

“The more he can play at this level, it will stand him in better stead for whatever happens in the future.

“He’s a great asset for the club and it’s fantastic for Swindon Town to have players like that coming through the system. It is a credit to the youth set-up here.”

Greer also paid tribute to a bumper County Ground home crowd, who were in fine voice as they easily brushed aside the challenge of the Saints.

“As footballers you relish times like that and I’m not sure of the attendance but it was really busy and all the boys thoroughly enjoyed it,” said the Scot.

“A lot of people think the support doesn’t really matter but it’s a massive part of football and I thought the fans were terrific. I’m just pleased we could put on a performance for them.”
