NORWICH City manager Paul Lambert believes the sides’ meeting last month will have no reflection on tonight’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy area quarter-final.

The Canaries ran out 1-0 winners at Carrow Road little more than a fortnight ago thanks to Chris Martin’s first half strike, in a game which Town were second best for long periods.

But Lambert insists it will be a fresh slate come kick-off at 7.30pm this evening, and is targeting a first trip to Wembley.

“A few weeks ago won't have any bearing on what happens,” he said.

“We know the rules of the competition, we try to field a strong side.

“The league is a more important one but it’s a competition I want to try and go all the way in because I've never been to Wembley before. So whatever team I pick out will hopefully go and win the game.

“I want to win it, and I’m sure Danny (Wilson) will view it the same.”

Norwich have been struck by a raft of injuries and suspensions - Adam Drury, Stephen Hughes, Matt Gill, George Francomb, Jon Otsemobor and Michael Spillane are all occupying the treatment table, while Simon Lappin and top scorer Grant Holt serve one-match bans.

And Lambert admitted his hands are tied when it comes to team selection for the clash, admitting: “I have to see who’s fit and who’s not.

“I can’t play lads that are not fit, I wouldn’t do that to anybody’s career.

“It’s not devaluing it, but I just can't play lads that are not fit and able to take the field of play.”
