TOWN bowed out of the FA Youth Cup at the second round stage as they went down 2-1 against Leyton Orient at the County Ground after extra-time tonight.

In an entertaining first half, Seb Broomfield's superb individual effort gave Swindon a deserved lead, only for the visitors to level minutes later through Harry Beautyman's free-kick.

The second period was much tighter, however, but Mark Hartmann and Seb Broomfield went close for the home side before Jordan Record spurned a great chance late on to seal their progression.

And Jake Argent won it for Orient early in extra-time when he finished from close range as Town failed to clear their lines.

Broomfield had the ball in the back of the net on five minutes, but his diving header was ruled out, having strayed just offside.

Town continued to press forward and a goalmouth scramble, in which Orient cleared off the line, ended with Mark Hartmann drilling a low shot narrowly wide.

And they got their rewards on 23 minutes. Broomfield latched on to a flick and proceeded to turn the visitors' defence inside out before curling an effort past keeper Jack Giddens and into the far corner from just outside the box.

However, within two minutes Orient were back on level terms as captain Harry Beautyman crashed a superb 25-yard free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net.

Matt Barnes forced Giddens into a good stop with a bouncing half-volley, while Jordan Record saw a deflected shot fly just the wrong side of the upright as Swindon looked to get back on top.

Orient defender Cestor Mike tested Callum Antell with a header from a corner and the same player went close again five minutes before half-time.

Beautyman shaped to fire in another free-kick but instead chipped the ball to the far post, where Mike met it unmarked. However, the centre-back was unable to get enough power on his effort and it was easy for Antell.

The second half was a tense affair, with most of the battle being played out in midfield, but Record went close to edging the home side back in front when he collected Will Evans' long free-kick, spun and struck a quick-fire shot from 30 yards which was narrowly wide.

Substitute Alex Henshall – under the watch of scouts from Manchester United and Birmingham among others – almost made an immediate impact when his left-wing cross was headed narrowly over by Broomfield.

And Hartmann was next to try his luck with a long range effort which was comfortably dealt with by Giddens.

Record should have sealed Town's progression on 81 minutes when Hartmann set him free in the box, but with only the keeper to beat the front man somehow fired straight at him.

And Swindon were made to pay eight minutes in to extra-time as Orient got themselves in front. The hosts failed to clear a long throw into the box and Jake Argent swivelled to thump a close-range shot past Antell.

Broomfield was agonisingly close to levelling things up again almost immediately before Dan Evans headed over from a corner.

Henshall had a strong penalty appeal turned down as he raced between two players, before seemingly being pulled down, but the referee waved away Town's appeals.
