JON-PAUL McGovern is confident of putting pen to paper on a new County Ground deal “over the next few weeks”, believing he is finally showing the Town faithful what he is capable of on a consistent basis.

The midfielder, who is out of contract in the summer, is one of four players - along with Billy Paynter, Kevin Amankwaah and Phil Smith - in negotiations over extending their stay with the League One promotion-chasers.

The Advertiser understands McGovern, pictured, has been offered an 18-month extension to his current terms, which would take him up to January 2012, and the former Sheffield Wednesday man admits he can see himself as a Swindon player for a few more years to come.

“We are under discussions right now and it’s not a case of just signing it straight away because there are little bits and bobs to be sorted,” he told the Advertiser.

“But I am quite confident. I would like to stay at Swindon because I’ve enjoyed my time so far.

“At first there were a few question marks - maybe I wasn’t performing at a consistent level. But this year the fans have really got behind me, I’ve enjoyed playing in front of them and I’ve loved the reaction around the town of the club doing well.

“I would like to think everything will get sorted over the next few weeks.

“I’m settled here, enjoying my football, playing every week and it’s up to me to make sure I’m doing that. If I can keep doing it at Swindon then I would be more than happy.”

McGovern, 29, attracted interest from a number of clubs both at home and abroad during the January transfer window, but the Scot is keen to stay put in Wiltshire at a club which he believes is clearly going places.

“There was contact from a few different people, but I wanted to see what was happening here first,” he revealed.

“Loyalty is a big thing and the way things are going on the pitch, if I can get something sorted then I don’t see any reason to not want to stay here.

“The way we have progressed and the way the club is run now from the time I came in, shows how far we have come,” he added.

“The chairman has done a great job in turning the club around and it is a fantastic place to be a part of.”
