CHAIRMAN Andrew Fitton believes Town’s success this season has stemmed from the simple fact of building a squad who want to play for the County Ground outfit.

Swindon take on Millwall in the League One play-off final tomorrow at Wembley, just a year after escaping relegation on the penultimate day of the campaign.

A mass clearout took place last summer as manager Danny Wilson stamped his own mark on the playing staff, and Fitton reckons they are on the verge of a place in the Championship because they acquired players with hunger for honours rather than cash.

“We have a squad of players who want to play for the club, it’s as simple as that,” the chairman told the Advertiser.

“When we have been close to signing players and then they ask us to go the extra yard financially, Danny (Wilson) doesn’t want to know.

“He doesn’t want them if they don’t really want to come here and are only interested in the money.

“We have players here who want to play for this club and are committed to this club.”

Fitton singled out two players as examples of rejecting lucrative moves elsewhere to sign on in Wiltshire.

“Take Jonathan Douglas,” he explained. “Who would have thought that we could sign a player of his calibre and that he would go on to play every game in which he was available?

“When we sat down and had a meeting with him, we knew he had a potentially better offer on the table from another club.

“But his agent told him that playing for Danny Wilson would be a privilege and he would get the best out of Jonathan.

“Vincent Pericard was the same. There were clubs all over him, even on the morning when he signed for us.

“But he wanted to be here, regardless of the other offers, and that’s what we want from all our players.”
