ANDREW Fitton has lifted the lid on his post-Wembley comments, explaining that “too many of the wrong people” have made him question his future in football.

But Town’s chairman has no intention of walking away from the County Ground any time soon.

Just hours after Swindon suffered defeat in Saturday’s League One play-off final, Fitton told the Advertiser that his role was a “hugely time-consuming job”, and that “I need to think about the way the club is run and what happens in the future.”

And the businessman, whose consortium saved the club in January 2008, remains concerned that those who love the sport could be driven away.

“There are one or two things away from the football field which have concerned me greatly and will probably come out in due course,” he said.

“There are some things which I have been disillusioned about – dealing with certain agents and things like that.

“The behaviour of certain people in football is incredible.

“One of the things may become public at some stage and I don’t want to pre-empt that, but there are too many of the wrong people around football, who make you question why anybody – not just me – would want to be involved in a sport which has got these issues going on.

“It is frustrating. I particularly have begun to question where our sport is in safe hands.

“There are a number of people trying to put obstacles in our way rather than trying to help us, and that is wrong on every level.

“Don’t get me wrong, there are some very good people in football who do a lot of good work, but there are others who seem determined to bring it down.”

Swindon’s supporters will have been shocked to hear Fitton contemplate his role at the club in the wake of Saturday’s loss.

But the chairman believes it proves just how passionate he is about the County Ground outfit.

“You probably caught me at a slightly weak moment but everything that was written was true and I did say it all,” he said.

“But wouldn’t you expect me to be thinking about my position? Ultimately we failed in our objective, so I then have to think about what we have to do to change that.

“I’m still angry about Saturday, but surely that is a good thing? If we didn’t care then you should be concerned.

“My wife is ready to kill me because I’m still frustrated about Saturday, but people should take it as a positive that we are as concerned as we are.”
