CONTINUOUS rain and high winds failed to dampen the spirits of more than 100 golfers at Marlborough Golf Club’s 30th anniversary Pro-Am tournament.

Although scoring was affected by the conditions, club captain Neil Patch had every reason to be pleased. The seven-handicapper’s team comprising general manager Les Trute, off 12, and Gary Darrock, off 10, took the top award, winning by three shots on 10-under-par 134.

They were partnered by Richard Dinsdale, the winner of this year’s West Region PGA order of merit, a Welsh international, PGA Cup player and former European Tour member.

He contributed enough birdies in his one-under-par 71 that brought a share of second place in the individual prizes to supplement the great efforts of the amateurs.

The Towergate No 3 team were led by another former European Tour player, Bristol’s Mark Sanders (Stockwood Vale). The team was Alex Thomas (off nine), Robert Pakeman (10) and Martin Ridler (24).

They beat the popular Jim Old Racing team on countback. Left-hander Old (off 13) had fellow racing trainer Jeff King (10) and his wife Trish (11), a former ladies captain at the club, for company. The pro was Chris Gill (Exeter) who also shared second in the individual.

Trevor Jones (The Kendleshire) set a record that is unlikely to be beaten by winning his fifth successive pro-am on the PGA West Region circuit.

He won by two shots with a remarkable round of three-under-par 69 considering the conditions.

He made five birdies and dropped two shots on the front nine before battling the elements to return with nine straight pars in the testing conditions.

Naomi House is this year’s chosen charity to benefit from the day. No-one won the Honda Insight car that was on offer as the hole-in-one prize.
