PHIL Smith would take three points above a shutout any day of the week.

But the Town goalkeeper admits keeping out the opposition would be a huge bonus ahead of tomorrow’s County Ground contest with basement battlers Yeovil.

Since Smith came into the starting line-up at the beginning of November, Swindon have only kept the slate clean on one occasion, in the 4-0 FA Cup victory at Plymouth.

That means Town have conceded in 12 of the last 13 games while Smith has been between the sticks, and you have to go way back to September 25 for the County Ground side’s last League One shutout, in the 1-0 win at home to Huddersfield.

“It’s nice to have a clean sheet for a goalkeeper but it’s the old cliché, wins are the most important thing,” said Smith.

“It’s not playing on my mind that I’ve got to keep a clean sheet because you can worry too much about that.

“Defensively in the last month I think we have been a lot better, because we had two unlucky goals against Charlton and a penalty and a good finish (against Oldham) on Saturday.

“We have been pretty tight defensively and we’re going in the right direction. I wouldn’t say no to a clean sheet but it’s not the be all and end all if we get a result. I just want to get a win, that’s all I want.”

Smith believes loanee Andy Frampton, who is rated 50-50 for this afternoon’s game with a groin problem, has provided the back four with the wise head it has needed in recent times.

“He’s been a louder voice on the pitch and he’s got the experience,” said Smith.

“He’s definitely added to the squad so if he can stay fit then he’s the figure we might have been missing since Gordon (Greer left).

The keeper added: “Scotty (Cuthbert) did really well when he came in against Oldham and Sean (Morrison) did brilliantly against Charlton, so we’ve got a bit of strength-in-depth in the back four, which we maybe were lacking.”
