CHARLIE Austin should stay focused on contributing towards the Swindon Town cause while he remains a Swindon Town player, says Robins chairman Andrew Fitton.

Words attributed to Austin were made public by a national media outlet yesterday which suggested the 21-year-old was frustrated by Town’s rejection of a Hull City approach last month.

Austin told skysports.com: “It would have been a good opportunity for me. Obviously I was disappointed the offer from Hull was turned down.” And, in response, Fitton has urged his 17-goal prized asset to take the example of a former fans’ favourite at the County Ground and keep his talking on the field of play.

“Players shouldn’t get sold into these conversations,” he said.

“It is not helpful for a player to makes comments like these. He makes himself a target for comments from other people.

“If you wanted to take a look at a good model you could look at Simon Cox, who always said ‘I will never ask for a move away. I’ll get on and do my job on the pitch and you do yours off it.”

The Swindon supremo said Austin has a duty to put everything into playing his part at Town, as he still remains a Robins player, and insisted there is still no blueprint in place to offload the £2million-rated striker.

“The Swindon public have taken Charlie Austin to their hearts and he need to give that back,” he said.

“It is important he is seen by the fans to be giving his 100 per cent best, and I will be telling Charlie that when I see him. There are no plans for him to be sold.

“Charlie Austin is a Swindon Town player until he is not.”
