AS I write this, the Devon spring sunshine is streaming through my cottage window.

The light is shining on the yellow of the daffodils, making for a heartening scene. After the toil of winter, it means thoughts turn to longer evenings and bright summer days.

It also means that thoughts turn to the business end of the football season.

It is over the next couple of months that all the hard work of the long winter, brings it's reward.

Cast your mind back 12 months. As Swindon fans, there was the inevitable relegation to come. We eagerly awaited the summer, so a bright new era could start.

Well, we're right at the beginning of that bright new era. We have a team that's setting new standards. Club records will hopefully tumble in the closing weeks of the campaign.

There have been disappointments of course. A double defeat by those along the A420 high on the list. The second of those losses last weekend.

It was a horrible day.

A return to the dark days of the 70's and 80's.

I missed most of the first 20 minutes, while I took evasive action from bottles, broken seats, coins, and smoke bombs.

I cannot understand the attraction of spending money and time looking to cause trouble at football games, which drags down the good name of your club. I may look at the game differently to some I suppose.

Having watched many matches in those dark days, I never want to return to a time when true fans don't go because they fear for their safety.

The tragic deaths of more of our young service personnel in Afghanistan this week, puts everything in perspective.

It's football, a sport, surely that's how it should be treated.

Enjoy these spring months in the right way. We have great times ahead, lets look forward to a long hot summer relishing the season that's coming to, what we hope, is a glorious finish. Follow Vic on twitter @swindonred and read his regular blog on thewashbag.com.
