PAUL Benson is determined not to let his lack of goals worry him despite only finding the net once in the last nine games.

The striker could not stop scoring following his move from Charlton in January, netting nine goals in his first 15 games, but has dried up a little since then, with his last strike coming against Morecambe on April 6, while the one before that was against Cheltenham on March 10.

But while the goals have not been as free flowing as he would have liked, Benson has still looked dangerous every time the Paul has been put into the box, and is convinced the goals will come.

“It does get on your mind because as a forward you always want to be scoring goals, and when you are not it is always a concern,” he said.

“I don’t like not scoring, but as long as the manager still thinks I am doing a job for the team then that takes a bit off it, and I am sure the goals will come again soon.

“I am always aware when I haven’t scored for a few games, but that is natural, but I do not let it play on my mind.

“I want to score more but you can’t let it worry you too much as that will affect your performance, but I want to finish the season strongly.”

Benson will be hoping his mini-drought comes to an end today at Gillingham, and if it does, the veteran is pleased that he will be able to celebrate his goal, and potentially promotion and the title, in front of the Town fans after a dispute over the cost of policing was resolved.

“I always thought it would be sorted, because they have had previous incidents like this and that it would be resolved,” he said.

“That can only benefit both teams because no one wants to play in an empty stadium, and we are going there looking to get a positive result which can win us promotion and the title.

“If we can get promotion we will be able to celebrate promotion properly with our fans, because it would have been ridiculous to go up in an empty stadium.”
