ALAN Connell will not let the fight to be Swindon Town’s top scorer distract him from ensuring the Robins end the season in style with victory at Bradford tomorrow.

Connell’s goal in Saturday’s 5-0 victory over Port Vale saw him move one ahead of Paul Benson in the race to be top scorer with 13 goals, with midfielder Matt Ritchie close behind on 11.

But Connell is not getting caught up in the battle, and doesn’t care how many he scores as long as he is helping the team win.

“Last week myself, Paul and Matty all scored so things are looking very interesting, so we will have to make sure we block that out of our minds and pass if someone is in a good position to score tomorrow,” he said.

“It is very interesting, but it has been a team effort this year and that is why we have ended up as the best team because we have been in it together.

“We have goals all over the pitch and certain people have stepped up and produced the goods on a certain day.

“I have got my nose in front at the moment, and we will just have to see how things are at 5pm on Saturday.”

Connell believes the fact the club has no clear top scorer is one of the reasons why they have been successful this season.

“I have not thought that much about it, but I have the league winners medal at home which is all I am bothered about,” he said.

“It has been all about the club and that is why we have done well this year because there has been no selfishness around the place. I would be delighted if we win on Saturday, and I would love to be top scorer, but I have not thought about it too much.

“Matt has 11 from midfield which is amazing and Benno has come in during January and done well, so it is a side issue really because we all work well together.”

While it has been a successful year on the field for Connell and his fellow Town players, the striker is now looking forward to some time off, but not before he has played a part in taking three points from tomorrow’s visit to Valley Parade.

“It has been a hard season and we have trained a lot and worked very hard, and of course we are looking forward to a summer holiday, but we are determined to beat Bradford,” he said.

“The gaffer wants 30 wins in the league, and we have got to look for the extra motivation now we are champions, and go out there and play like champions.”
