ALAN Connell has reiterated his desire to be a “big part” of Swindon Town’s future.

The striker, who top scored for the Robins with 14 goals in 2011/12, has found himself in and out of the starting line-up at the County Ground despite becoming a firm favourite amongst the fans this season.

Connell signed a two-year contract last summer when he was plucked from non-league Grimsby for a reported six-figure fee, but the 29-year-old has every hope that he will be able to extend his stay as Town aim for back-to-back promotions.

“I love it here. I’m 100 per cent committed to Swindon and I don’t want to leave,” he told the Advertiser.

“It’s a great club and I appreciate everyone’s support for me this season and I really want to be a big part of the club’s future.

“I had a feeling this season would be a bit special with the manager we’ve got and that we might get a bit of media attention.

“But what’s happened has exceeded all of our expectations - winning the league, getting to Wembley and the FA Cup run - it’s been incredible.

“I’ve loved every minute of it. It’s been the most enjoyable season of my career by a long way.

“The club wants to get promotion again. With the squad we’ve got now I think we’ll be at the top end of League One and hopefully the signings we’ll make in the summer will push us on even further.

“I’m really confident in the boys we’ve got here and the ability and togetherness that we’ve got and I think next year we’ll be competing at the top end of League One, which is where this club should at least be.

“We’ve got very good characters in the squad where we all work hard and get on with our jobs.”

Connell is well aware that competition for places will be fierce next season, with manager Paolo Di Canio poised to reinforce his squad once he has been given assurance by the Town board that money will be available to fund a serious assault on League One.

But the forward thinks he will flourish under the pressure of facing a battle for his shirt.

“I’m sure we’ll try and bring players in, we’re always trying to bring players in. That’s why the club’s done well, we’re always looking to move forward,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to being part of the club next season. I want to play my part again, work hard and fight for my place just like I have done this season.

“I’m sure the gaffer will make sure he not only brings in the right quality players but also good characters who will help the boys fit in well, like he has recently with the likes of Jay McEveley, Luke Rooney, Paul Benson - good characters as well as good players.”
