MICHELLE Rich hit four goals as Swindon Town Ladies cruised to Wilts FA Women’s Cup success against a brave Swindon Spitfires outfit.

The final was played at Calne’s Bremhill View ground and Rich’s haul was supplemented by a further goal from Hayley Huckin, to ensure a comfortable 5-1 win.

The result meant Town have now won the county competition on two occasions, and made up for their disappointment at losing the League Cup final recently.

Manager Glyn Evans was understandably delighted to secure such an emphatic result, and said that his team were well-worth their victory on the day.

He said: “The players made up for the League Cup 100 per cent on Sunday, they dictated play from start to finish.

“A lot of people were saying beforehand that we should beat them quite comfortably, but you never know in a cup final and I would have been quite happy with a 1-0 victory.

“You can’t complain about scoring five. We’ve won the county cup for the last two years now and to retain it is always hard.

“We’ve got a very good squad and young and older players who have mixed together and done very well this year. It’s been our best season for a long time.”

Town made the best possible start when they opened the scoring after 55 seconds, as Catherine Reid sent in a searching corner and Rich nodded home.

Evans’ side continued to create chances and Spits had their goalkeeper to thank for preventing them going further behind.

However, eventually Rich grabbed her second of the game as she shot home from outside the area.

Reid and Rich then combined for the second time as the latter completed her hat-trick, before Spits pulled one back from long range.

After the break, Town put to bed any hopes their opponents had of a comeback as Rich added number four.

Later on, further pressure paid off as Huckin added her name to the scoresheet and put the polish on a resounding victory.

Town had secured their path to the final with victories over Alderbury (6-0), Salisbury City (4-0) and Wootton Bassett (2-1).

The club is always looking for new players and will be starting a reserve side next season to give support to the first team.

There will be plenty of young players involved and more of all ages are being sought.
