LUKE Rooney thinks Swindon Town have every chance of securing back-to-back promotions when they take on League One next season.

The winger, signed from Gillingham in January, says the recent example of Stevenage making the top six in English football’s third tier shows anything can be achieved.

And Rooney believes the calibre of teams in League One has decreased in the last two years, with the likes of Southampton, Norwich, Leeds, Charlton and Sheffield Wednesday all climbing up into the Championship and beyond.

“We’ve certainly got the players. Even if we make no signings we’ve got the players to do well in League One,” he told the Advertiser. “No disrespect to the likes of Stevenage but if you look at a team like them in the play-offs, then there’s no reason why we can’t be in the play-offs, if not better, next season.

“I’m by no means patronising or disrespecting the likes of Stevenage, or your Brentfords and Carlisles who just missed out, but if those sort of clubs can be in the play-off reckoning there’s absolutely no reason why we can’t be there.

“If you look at it there’s been a few back-to-back promotions recently where teams have kept that momentum going.

“If you look at the teams that were in it three years ago you had Norwich, Southampton, Leeds and even this year you’ve had both the Sheffield clubs, who are massive clubs like ourselves, and Charlton.

“Doncaster aren’t a massive club and probably not as big as what we are and they’ve come down, Portsmouth are likely to struggle so it’s not going to be a case of having those big clubs like there was last season and a few seasons ago when I was in there with Gillingham.

“It will genuinely be an opportunity and an opportunity I know the gaffer will definitely want to take.

“It’s an opportunity all the players will want to take because we’re all here to stay as well.”
