LUKE Rooney believes Swindon Town already possess players of Championship ability.

The Robins surged to the League Two title in 2011/12 and now have their eyes firmly set on back-to-back promotions when they tackle League One next season.

And Rooney, a January signing from Gillingham, thinks the calibre of Town’s current crop is already high enough for Swindon fans to start planning for another top-of-the-table challenge.

Despite that, the winger fully expects plenty of movement - in terms of players both leaving and arriving at the County Ground - as what he dubs the transfer ‘merry-go-round’ cranks into gear.

“Some of the players we’ve got already are good enough to play in League One, probably even the Championship,” he told the Advertiser.

“There’s always going to be comings and goings, that’s part of football. Someone once told me when I was a scholar that it is a merry-go-round, the football industry, and it really is.

“There’s nothing like it. I’m sure there’ll be comings and goings but I’m sure they’ll be for the better and that will only improve the team next season.

“It’s competition for places. It doesn’t really happen in any other job because you’re there and it’s easy but in football it’s hard.

“The manager will bring in players but I think it’s all good for the competition and as long as you’re confident enough and have the determination to show you can be better than the guy he’s brought in, then you just have to have the belief you can do that. “ With Town having completed their final training session last week, Rooney is planning a short break from the game as he looks to relax and recharge his batteries.

But by his own admission, the 21-year-old will struggle to stay away from football for too long.

“For 12 days or so you can afford to do nothing but for me, personally, I’m not the sort of person who can just let himself go because then you’re catching up pre-season.,” he said.

“I’d rather come in with a bit of a head-start and hopefully I can do that.”
