SWINDON interim chairman Jeremy Wray has called for patience among Town fans as he looks to kick-start the club’s spending spree this summer.

The Robins have yet to make their first move in the transfer market following their promotion from League Two, and the inevitable speculation amongst supporters regarding who may be interesting the club has begun to intensify.

The latest player to be strongly linked with a switch to the County Ground is striker Andy Williams, who recently turned down a lucrative new deal at Yeovil and will become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of next month.

The Advertiser has learnt that Williams was on Town’s radar in January, while the local press in Somerset have claimed that Swindon have now placed an offer on the table for the 25-year-old to mull over.

However, Wray kept his cards close to his chest when questioned on the subject, stressing that there will be plenty of news to interest the fans over the next few months.

“It’s wrong to speculate,” he told the Advertiser.

“We will be making a number of signings over the course of the summer but it is important to be patient.

“Let’s do these things properly and announce them as and when they are done.”

Meanwhile, Wray paid tribute to outgoing goalkeeper Phil Smith, who has not been offered a new contract in Wiltshire.

Smith, who made 132 appearances over six years with the Robins, announced he had been released via Twitter yesterday and Wray had nothing but praise to hand to the 32-year-old.

“He’s been the longest serving player and I wish him well. I’m sure he will have no trouble finding a new club,” he said.

“He’s been a great servant to the club and he’s a very good keeper.

“He’ll always be remembered for the JPT game (against AFC Wimbledon) when he saved those three penalties - that was a special night.

“He goes with the best wishes from everyone at Swindon and he will be welcome at any time when he comes back.”

The Adver understands that Mark Scott, Callum Kennedy and Lander Gabilondo will also leave Swindon this summer after the trio were not offered new deals.
