SWINDON Town have been offered the services of several Championship-standard players over the course of the past week, according to manager Paolo Di Canio.

Town, who begin the second week of a fortnight of pre-season training on the banks of Lake Garda today, have already brought in seven new faces over the course of the summer.

However, Di Canio is still ken to add to his ranks before competitive action resumes next month, and he has admitted that he could be interested in recruiting at least two of the unnamed individuals.

The Italian did stress, though, that he would be wary of the financial restrictions of his budget and that he would not fork out huge sums to secure their respective arrivals.

“In the last few days, without pressure, I have received communication from some players who want to join this year,” he said.

“I want to be careful. I don’t want a 30 or 29-year-old moving because he thinks it’s easy, a good club, good fans, good professionalism.

“Maybe they are talking like this and then when they come here they don’t mind if they play or don’t play with big wages.

“But the fact that everybody wants to come makes me happy and puts me in a position to relax, I can think properly what I need over the next few days – I don’t want to decide now.

“Especially two (are of interest) but we have to wait a bit more for some reasons.

“I want to wait a bit more because, even if I wait another two weeks for example, they can recover their position because we can integrate a training session for them.

“Any player I would like to bring, and I have spoken to the people, already they have a good base of fitness. There will be no difficulty helping them do what we want.”

After last year’s pre-season, during which Di Canio was forced to offer trial after trial to a series of foreign players with little to no success – this summer has been something of a blessing for the Robins’ boss.

And he expressed his delighted that Swindon is starting to attracted top quality once again.

“I’m happy because, to be honest, last year we used to search for any player on video, at the time there were a few names who were mentioned who didn’t want to join us – if you remember Cody McDonald,” he said.

“Now we have Championship players that want to move in here and that makes me very happy, for the club and for the fans because we are attracting top players.”

Meanwhile, Di Canio revealed that any potential deal for a mystery player plying his trade in northern Europe is now dead.

Last week he suggested that Town were trying to prise the man in question away from his current club, who are currently in the middle of their league season.

But there will be no further movement on that subject, with Di Canio saying: “No, he can’t come.

“There was an injury in his squad in his position. We have another target at the moment.”
