DESPITE a stint wearing the skipper’s armband recently, Simon Ferry has concluded that it will take something and someone special to steal the captaincy from Paul Caddis any time soon.

Ferry, who took on the role for the second half of Swindon’s 9-1 victory over a local select XI last week, stressed how he feels Caddis is perfectly suited to leading the Robins both on and off the pitch.

And he suggested that manager Paolo Di Canio is unlikely to ever strip his former Celtic colleague of the position in favour of his close friend.

“There’s so much more to being a captain than just on the pitch. Off the pitch I think Cads is perfect,” said Ferry.

“He’s very down to earth and he concentrates on what’s in hand and he loves his football and that so I don’t think I’ll be taking that off Cad any time soon.

“He was injured for the game recently but I think he did really well as captain last year and he’s the perfect guy for it.

“Ever since we were young he’s always been the guy that everyone looks to because he never has a bad game, he’s always encouraging the boys and he’s perfect like that.”

Caddis returned to training with the rest of the Town squad at their pre-season camp on the banks of Lake Garda yesterday, following a stint of solo work designed to help him get over a knee complaint.

Ferry was delighted to see his best mate back in action.

“We are like chalk and cheese but opposites attract. He’s quite cute too, so that helps,” he said.

“He’s back into training now after his knee and his ankle, and he was training alone for a bit which I don’t think he liked very much.

“It’s good to have him back and when he’s training you can see the quality he brings to training so hopefully he can get a wee run-out against Bayern Munich.”

Meanwhile, winger Gary Roberts was also involved in the ballwork section of training on Monday as he recovers from an inflammation of the sciatic nerve.
