Swindon's Westall expecting a tough test against Marlow

Swindon Advertiser: Swindon's Adam Westall Swindon's Adam Westall

FLY-HALF Adam Westall believes Saturday’s game away at Marlow will be a more accurate reflection of how much progress Swindon have made during the off-season.

The Greenbridge Road club kicked off their campaign in style last weekend with a 62-6 home win over High Wycombe, but there were still a number of areas to work on despite the big victory.

Swindon travel to Marlow tomorrow to face a side who have consistently finished near the top of the South West 1 East table, and Westall is a expecting a much tougher contest.

“We played well in patches against Wycombe to win the game, but for 70 per cent of the match we were just competitive, and if we play like that we won’t win that many games.

“Marlow are a great side and I think they finished third last year, so it will be tough for us.

“They play a good brand of rugby and have a good nine and 10 and a good pack, so we will have to be at our best.

“I think we will know a lot more about ourselves after this game, because last year I think we were only separated by a point on aggregate in our two games, so we know it will be close.”

Westall has been impressed by a number of the younger players who have come into the Swindon side this season, and is looking forward to see how they develop.

“We have a full selection of backs to pick from for the game, but we are missing some forwards,” he said.

“We are probably missing six players who could slot into our first team, but that means there is a good opportunity for others to come in and play.

“We have a lot more strength in depth now which is important, especially as we will be losing a few guys who are off to university soon.

“But we have Sam Williams who has come in from Newport Gwent Dragons who is keen to show he can play senior rugby, and Sam Wells at inside centre can change things for us.”
