Visiting winger Lee Cook gave Orient the lead after 59 minutes as he slammed the ball into the back of the net as the ball was allowed to creep across the Town box, but seven minutes later Rooney was presented with a golden chance to level things up, just seconds after he replaced James Collins.

The Irishman found himself through on goal but scuffed his shot wide under pressure from Nathan Clarke, but Rooney believes he should have found the net on his home debut.

“It is obviously a disappointing result to end a bad week, and the lads are obviously hurt at the moment,” he said.

“I think I should have scored when I came on, but hopefully I will get a few more in the next one.

“I should have finished the chance today and there was one I snatched at against Oxford on Wednesday too, but I am working on my sharpness and that will come.

“It wasn’t the best of games, but I think we created the better chances and played the better football in spells, but we were not consistent enough and it was a fairly scrappy game.

“They were a hard working side who are scrapping for points, but I think we will see a lot of that in this league so we have to make sure we are playing our football.

“We have a full week of training this weekend we can work in training on how we want to play next week.”

The deadline day loan signing’s his move to the County Ground has coincided with a run or three straight defeats, but Rooney is confident Town can quickly turn it around.

“A few new lads have come in and it takes a bit of time to gel, but I think we have settled in well and all the lads who were already here have welcomed us,” he said.

“It has been a bad week, but hopefully we can quickly get back to where we were at the start of the season, because they played some great football here at times.

“I am sure we can get some good wins in a row, like when the lads won 10 or 11 on the bounce last season, and we can do that by working hard.”
