SUPERMARINE midfielder Rob Dean insists his side must improve after crashing out of the FA Cup First Qualifying Round with a defeat to AFC Totton. Marine went down 6-0 to the Southern Premier side on Saturday, and Dean is desperate to see a response when they face Yate Town in the preliminary round of the FA Trophy this weekend.

“To be honest there’s no positives to take from the match,” said Dean.

“It was a poor display all over. I don’t think one player could come off that pitch today and say they put in a performance.

“We were second best from the start and that carried on throughout the game. We tried to come out second half and show a bit of pride but it didn’t happen for us. “We gave the ball away too cheaply and didn’t defend particularly well – not just the back four but all over the pitch. The work-rate wasn’t there and that’s something that we have to put right this Saturday.”

Dave Webb’s Marine side played the tie shorn of some influential players, in particular Dave Bampton who missed the game due to a family bereavement. However Dean, who stood in as captain for Bampton, did not blame this for the defeat.

“We did have some key players missing,” he said. “But with the players we’ve got we shouldn’t be losing 6-0 to anyone, even if they are in the division above.

“It’s disappointing because you always want to do well in the FA Cup. We’ve got to put it right against Yate and then kick on in the league. If we play like that again, we’ll get found out in the league.”

Wootton Bassett ’s reward for going through at Highworth ’s expense is a second qualifying round trip to Blue Square South side Dorchester, while Chippenham go to Bishop’s Cleeve.
