PLAYERS from Westlecot still have an active interest in many of the national championship competitions.

In the four main national championships events, Westlecot have three finalists in the Area 10 ladies section where all the matches have to be completed by January 25.

Lucy Smith has reached the singles final and will play Jennie Cole (Leominster) away. However, Smith and her sister Katy have home advantage against MidGlos duo Jo Surman and Maryann Pye in the pairs final.

To complete the Westlecot treble, Val Coles, Rosemary Nichols and Jenny Vowles beat club colleagues Linda Perfitt, Jill Webb and Wendy Anderson 16-6 to book an area triples finals place away against MidGlos.

Perfitt will team up with Anderson in the final of the O60s pairs competition away to Ann Leach and Pauline Gunn at MidGlos. The duo will be joined by Vowles to play Cotswold at home in the Over50s two-wood triples area final.

Finally in the ladies section, Katy Smith has qualified for the last 16 in the ladies’ U25 singles to be held at White Oak (Swanley, Kent) later this month. Smith faces Chloe Wordingham (Wellingborough) in her first match.

In the men’s national championships in Area 10, Gary Jackson, Matt Webster and Dave Godwin are set to play Neil Chandler’s Cotswold triple away in the semi-finals.

Godwin, Wesbter, Paul Kistle and Mike Richards have to play club colleagues Kevin Embling, Chris Cheesley, Ian Jefferies and Neil Smith for a place in the area fours final.

The men’s three O60s competitions are far more advanced than the championship events.

After beating Eddie Brain (Cotswold) 21-19, Dave Snell faces another Cotswold player, Paul Glastonbury, in the Area 10 singles semi-finals on January 11. Dave Mathews and John Thomas face John Heathcote (Cotswold) in the pairs semis having beaten Kevin Embling and Snell 22-20 in the last eight.

Meanwhile, Matthews, Embling, Jeff Nichols and skip Thomas were beaten 22-16 in the Area 10 O60s fours final by ex-Scottish international Edric Vorsterman’s (Malvern Hills) foursome.

And Embling, Jefferies and Snell have reached the area final in the O50s triples and will face Mark Atkins (Malvern Hills).

Finally, Lucy and Neil Smith lost in the Area 10 final of the mixed pairs 23-21 to Nathan Kitchen and his MidGlos partner. A few days later Lucy, Katy and Neil Smith, plus Ian Jefferies, also lost in the mixed fours final to the Atkins foursome from Malvern Hills.
