WOOTTON Bassett was the only club to supply more than one winner at the Swindon & District Men’s Association annual finals day last Saturday at Faringdon.

They took the honours in the pairs and champion of champions competitions, while the other eight titles were shared by Highworth, Westlecot, Purton, Wroughton, Garrards, Shrivenham, Wanborough and Supermarine.

However, it was a day that S&D men’s treasurer and competitions secretary Paul Boyles (Purton) will want to quickly forget. He contested three finals and collected a hat-trick of losses.

Bassett’s Alan Small retained his pairs title in the morning, Dave Edmonds replacing Dale Hayward as they beat Rodbourne Cheney 27-12.

Bassett completed their double in the afternoon as Terry Walton beat Ian Jefferies (Westlecot) in a high-quality champion of champions final, the lead changing hands several times before Walton triumphed 22-19.

Mark Richman (Highworth) enjoyed a comfortable 21-11 success over John Thomas (Westlecot) in the men’s singles final, while Gary Jackson won the U25 all-Westlecot singles final 21-16 against teammate Mike Titcombe.

Wroughton foursome Rob Palmer, Brian Coles, John Fell and Brian Whittingham thumped Rodbourne Cheney, skipped by Stuart Murray, 27-10 in the fours final.

Boyles’ day began with a 21-5 defeat after only 12 ends in the Officers Singles by Shrivenham’s Keith Carter.

At lunchtime, he was edged out 21-18 by former S&D president Chris Payne (Garrards) in the over 60s singles and he then lost in the all-Purton triples final 23-9 to Dave Hall, Colin Baker and Dave Mitchell.

Wanborough became the inaugural winners in the new mixed triples team event, defeating Wroughton 34-26 in the final, while in the Eddie Wells Charity triples team final Supermarine won on three of them and drew on the other as they comfortably retained their title beating Garrards 96-58.

All of the trophies will be formally presented to the winners by 2015 S&D men’s president Peter Stewart (Westlecot) at the presentation evening on Saturday, October 17 at Supermarine BC.
