WESTLECOT men completed a fine double in national and regional team competitions last weekend.

Firstly, they defeated Carterton by 28 shots in the Denny Plate and followed it up with a convincing win over Swindon Manor in the Wessex League.

Westlecot led Carterton 18-15 at five ends but had moved 44-25 clear at 10 and extended the advantage to 67-36 at 15.

And with Westlecot holding a 76-45 lead at 18 ends, the Carterton home rink facing Ian Jefferies conceded their game after 19 ends, resulting in an overall win for Westlecot of 28 shots.

Westlecot took the honours on three of the four rinks and on the one that they lost, the losing margin was only a shot.

The Old Town club progress to the third round, where they will meet Clevedon.

However, the game was originally due to take place next Saturday but the date clashes with the annual Westlecot Open Singles Tournament, which is part of the Open Singles Circuit, so the tie will now be played on Saturday, December 19.

Westlecot indoor chairman Jeff Nichols said: “I have been in touch with Clevedon’s Pip Branfield and he has been A1 with me over the matter and common sense has prevailed.

“He has been back to his players and they (Clevedon) have agreed to solve the situation by agreeing to play the game a week later and this has been approved by the competitions administrator John Hoyles.”

Westlecot then went and regained top spot in the east section of the Wessex League after thumping Swindon Manor on Sunday.

They dominated the match from start to finish, winning on all four rinks to collect a maximum of 16 points, sufficient to move them two points clear of Carterton.

Across the board, Westlecot raced into a 45-9 lead after only five ends and had increased that to 69-27 at 10.

The Old Town club continued to power away from the Manor, leading 101-36 at 15 ends, 128-39 at 18 and finally won 140-47.

Neil Smith’s rink at home at Westlecot recorded the biggest winning margin of 41 shots. They led 23-0 after six ends and finally won 49-8.

Next best was Ian Jefferies' rink at the Manor, who won by 28 shots.

Westlecot’s next Wessex League game is tomorrow (Sunday) at 10am when they meet third-placed West Berks while Swindon Manor have another tough task as they face second-in-the-table Carterton.

Neil Smith will miss the Westlecot game against West Berks (Newbury) as he will be at Northampton & District taking part in the England trials for the team to be chosen to compete in the Home International Championships at Llanelli, South Wales, next March.

Smith made his international debut for England in late September in a mixed Test match versus Wales at Stanley, Co. Durham.
