MAISIE DANIELL booked her place in the central regional final of the English Bowls Youth Development Scheme next month with a fine performance in the county finals held recently at North Wilts Indoor Bowls Club (Chippenham).

The 15-year-old, from Royal Wootton Bassett, who was representing the Swindon Manor Indoor Club triumphed in the Under 18 section of the Wiltshire championships.

A total of 15 aspiring young bowlers from around the county took part in the Wiltshire County Championships and were divided into two age group sections - Under 15 and Under 18.

The competitors all played three bowls matches in a round robin format in their age group in the morning and after lunch took part in the skills section which included a series of exercises.

Daniell took the honours in the U18 section, winning two of her bowls matches and drawing the third to earn 25 points while topping the skills section with 48 points just two points clear of her elder sister, Charlotte, a former winner of the Under 15 section a few years ago, who scored 46.

Runner-up to Daniell in the Under 18s was Christie Miller’s Georgina Newman who scored a 30 points maximum in the bowling and 34 points in the skills section.

North Wilts player Kara Little won the U15 section from Edwin Stanford who plays out of Five Rivers, Salisbury.

Royal Wootton Bassett Academy pupil Daniell plays outdoor bowls for her local club.

She has been playing for six years and comes from a bowling family. Three generations of the Daniell family have been members of the Royal Wootton Bassett outdoor bowls club.

Grandmother Janet was a stalwart of the club and a former Swindon & District Ladies president, her father James is a coach at Bassett and the Manor while her elder sister Charlotte (17) and Hayden (13) also both play the sport.

Six juniors represented Swindon Manor at North Wilts in the County EBYDS Championships. They were the three Daniell children Maisie, Charlotte and Hayden, plus Frankie Stinchcombe, Jack Wilkins and Milly Woodbridge - the only Manor junior missing was Callum Danter.

County organiser John Menzies, from Salisbury, said: “The EBYDS Wiltshire went very well and was of a high standard.

“I am really looking forward to the next stage, the Central Area School of Excellence, scheduled for MidGlos IBC on April 16.”

Swindon Manor player and coach Carl Fernandes added: “We have a special coaching session for the juniors every Saturday morning.

“To try and increase numbers we are offering any adult who brings a junior along to the Saturday morning session free bowling at the Manor.”
