HIGHWORTH’S Joanna Richman, along with Town Garden’s Laura Laytham and Ginny Nash of Royal Wootton Bassett, all shone in the ladies two wood singles competition.

Competitors from around Wiltshire battled for a last-eight spot to keep their hopes alive of playing in the national championships at Royal Leamington Spa in August.

Swindon hosted one of the two groups in the northern section in the ladies county national two wood singles championship, with Richman and Laytham qualifying the quarter-finals at Box on Friday, June 17.

To secure their place at Box later this month, Richman beat Pewsey’s Christine Heath 19-4 while Laytham edged past Bassett’s Charlie Godwin 15-14.

In the other northern group held at Pewsey, it was Nash who beat Wroughton’s Margaret Douthwaite 16-13, and Chippenham Town’s Irene Button, booking their place in the last eight.

  • PURTON saw two of their triple rinks progress from the last 16 of the Wiltshire ladies national triples championship on Tuesday evening.

The trio of Chris Mitchell, Julie Jones and Alison Fail beat Pewsey, skipped by Trish Jarrett, while the combination of Judy Preddy, Val Baster and Judith Fish defeating Wanborough, skipped by Deanne Davis – both Purton winning trios qualify for the quarter and semi-finals of the triples, to be played at Wilton on Saturday, June 11 (10.15am).

In the northern group section, Stratton Churchway’s Josie Lloyd, Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis beat Pat Edmond’s Bassett trio.

Highworth’s Linda Kingston, Maggie Jordan and Richman beat Wroughton on Thursday night.

  •  WILTSHIRE ladies face Devon this afternoon in their opening Johns Trophy match at Culm Vale today.

In this season’s campaign in the inter-county championship, Wiltshire have been drawn in a five-county West Group B and play Devon before hosting Dorset at Devizes on June 25.
