SISTERS Lucy and Katy Smith are through to the last 16 and final stages of this season’s ladies national U25s championship.

The Westlecot duo, from West Swindon, who play outdoors for Royal Wootton Bassett, have become the first players from the Old Town indoor club to book a place in the 2016/17 national finals.

They sealed their spots in the last 16 of the ladies U25s championships at City of Ely on January 28-29 by winning their sections in the west regional final staged last Sunday at Bristol.

Elder sister Lucy, 21, had a tough draw but in her semi-final, beat the improving Rebecca Cresswell (Dolphin, Poole) 2-0 in sets, 9-4, 8-4.

Then, in her second game and sectional final, she beat Torquay United’s Cassidy Lenton, who has been a regular in the England U25s side for the past four seasons since 2013, in straight sets 2-0 (7-6, 8-6).

Katy, 19, played firstly Imogen Cracknell (St Andrews, Weston-Super-Mare) in her section of the draw and enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win (9-3, 8-2) but was pushed much harder in her second game and sectional final by Yeovil’s Emily Corner.

Katy lost the first set 8-3 but bounced back to win the second set 10-5 and win the first two ends of the three-end tie-breaker to clinch a 2-1 victory (3-8, 10-5, 2-0) and her place at City of Ely next January.

This is the third year in a row that Katy has reached the last 16 and final stages of the U25s and second year for Lucy.

Last year, the sisters were drawn against each other at White Oak IBC (Swanley, Kent) in the first round (last 16).

Katy went on to reach the semi-finals before going out to the eventual winner, England international and former ladies world matchplay champion Katherine Rednall (Ipswich).

This time around, the Smith girls have been kept apart, with Katy in the top half of the last 16 draw and Lucy in the bottom part of the draw.

The two sisters have also been selected for the final England U25s trial at Northampton & District on Sunday, December 4 (1pm).

Lucy has one U25s indoor cap gained in February 2014 while Katy has none but an England U18s outdoor cap which she picked in September 2015.
