WILTSHIRE'S men produced a stunning final flourish to turn their first round Liberty Trophy at Berkshire on its head.

They trailed for most of the game, only going ahead 89-87 after 16 ends of play in Reading .

Wiltshire were 34-26 down at five ends, 53-46 adrift at nine and 85-83 at 15 before moving ahead after 16 ends.

The Moonrakers moved into overdrive mode, scoring another 19 shots en route to their 108-95 success.

Stars of the show were the all Five Rivers’ foursome of Ashley Plumb, Jamie Reynolds, Fraser Boynton and skip Tom Warner, who blitzed their opponents 28-5.

There were also fine contributions in the latter stages to the overall victory from Neil Smith’s rink, who scored 15 shots in the last six ends and only dropped one shot to win by seven, while on the third green, Ian Jefferies' four scored five shots on the final two ends to win by eight.

On the fourth green, Mike Titcombe’s quartet were 16-8 down at 14 ends but scored eight in the last four ends to force a 16-16 draw.

Team manager Smith said: “It was a great comeback from 17 shots down at one stage to win by 13 shots; a fantastic effort.

“I’m really proud of the team and the way we didn’t panic when behind, and steadily got ourselves back in the game.”

The county are back in action on December 17 when they head to Stroud-based Cotswold to face Gloucestershire.

Two of the winning rinks remain unchanged – those skipped by Ian Jefferies and Tom Warner while the unavailable Craig Hatherall returns in Mike Titcombe’s rink in place of reserve Shaun Hicks, who reverts to the substitutes bench.

Mel Biggs comes in for Chris Cheesley in Neil Smith’s winning rink, with Cheesley switching to Wayne Snook’s rink along with Dave Godwin.

A new Christie Miller rink of Tom Newman, Darren Anteney, Paul Macdonald and the previously unavailable Andy Moore is formed, resulting in Terry Walton and Steve Remington joining Hicks on the reserves bench at Cotswold.
