WESTLECOT came out on top in the Wessex League east section local derby clash with Swindon Manor last Sunday morning.

The Old Town club ran out comfortable 29-shot winners (83-54), whitewashing their local rivals and taking the spoils on all four rinks for a maximum 16-point haul.

The success increased their lead at the top of the table to 19 points over Carterton and 26 points over third-placed West Berks (Newbury) with Manor remaining in fifth place.

Instead of the usual Wessex format of two rinks home and two away, all four matches were played in Old Town at Westlecot as Swindon Manor had been booked for a county coaching session.

Westlecot led throughout going 22-17 up overall after five ends, leading 42-28 at halfway, 62-46 at 15 and finally winning 83-54 at 18.

The Manor rink skipped by Carl Fernandes was 10-9 up at nine ends against Steve Remington and was only brushed aside when dropping a count of five on the penultimate end to eventually lose 19-15.

Similarly Paul Cooper’s rink battled hard against Kyle Anderson’s Westlecot quartet and was 8-6 up at six ends and only two shots down 13-11 and 15-13 at 13 and 15 ends but then dropped two singles and a count of five on the last end to finish 22-13 down at 18.

East section leaders Westlecot’s next match is on January 8 against Rivermead (Reading) while Manor do not play again until January 22 when they meet Chipping Norton.
