SWINDON’S two indoor men’s teams, who had both been enjoying fine campaigns in the Wessex League, both slumped to east section defeats last Sunday.

Leaders Westlecot, unbeaten in their six previous games, crashed to a shock defeat at the hands of mid-table Oxford City and County, going down 73-53 and only collecting two points out of 16 for one winning rink.

Manor, having their best season since rejoining the league in the autumn of 2014, suffered a heavy 34-shots defeat against Oxford & District, losing on all four rinks and not collecting any of the 16 points on offer.

Westlecot were involved in two close matches at home and after leading 13-5 after six ends, were gradually pulled back but did eventually win 31-29, with Kyle Anderson’s quartet triumphing 17-13 but Mel Biggs’ foursome lost 16-14.

The damage however was done away in the centre of Oxford, where Dave Godwin and Steve Remington’s rinks both failed to repair the damage done by slow starts, the former going on to lose 21-12 and the latter 21-10.

The loss saw Westlecot’s lead at the head of east region affairs cut to only eight points.

Westlecot, who face Oxford and District on Sunday, will be looking to bounce back to winning ways while Manor meet basement club Rivermead.
