THE VASTLY experienced pair of Wendy Anderson and Janet Willis carry Westlecot’s final hopes of the 2016/17 indoor season in the national championships over the next week.

Anderson and Willis compete in the ladies senior (over 60) pairs competition on Wednesday and Thursday, April 12-13.

They will be hoping to build on the exploits of fellow Westlecot ladies indoor bowler Katy Smith, who struck gold by winning the ladies u25 singles title at City of Ely in late January and a fortnight later lifted the British Isles Womens Indoor Bowls Council u25 title as well in Wales.

They were the first national indoor titles to be won by a Westlecot bowler since 2005.

Anderson and Willis take to the green in Nottingham on April 12 (9.30am) when they face Pam Reynolds and Joyce George, a combination from Wellingborough (Northants) in the first round (last 16).

Should they be successful, they would play Herts (Watford) or Barwell (Leics) in the quarter-finals at 6pm. The semi-finals and final are scheduled for the next day, at 9.30am and 2pm respectively.

Anderson is no stranger to national glory. She was a member of the Westlecot ladies’ side that won the O60s Mason Trophy double rinks competition in 2003, beating Cheshunt in the final and then losing in the final the following year to Thornaby (County Durham).

While Anderson, together with Jean Bird and Joyce Laming, lost on an extra end in the ladies over 50 two wood triples final to Rushden Town (Northants) in 2002 but three years later, they lifted the trophy beating Colchester in the final.

The indoor season at Westlecot officially drew to a close for this season last night, but the indoor AGM will be held next week at the clubhouse in Old Town on Wednesday, April 12, at 7pm.

Wessex League play-offs final will be staged tomorrow at City and County of Bristol IBC, commencing at 11am.

Somerset side Clarrie Dunbar face Kingsthorpe (Northants).
