TEAMS from Wroughton, Westlecot and Purton will be bidding to reach this year’s ladies national championships at Royal Leamington Spa today.

The Wiltshire women’s county championship started a fortnight ago as the opening two rounds in the fours event were played with the third round and last 16 held around the county last Monday.

In the northern section, the quartet to miss-out in the sectional last eight was Wanborough after they lost to Chippenham Town.

Joining Chippenham in the fours quarter-finals at Royal Wootton Bassett today are 2013 runners-up the Purton quartet of Chris Mitchell, Julie Jones, Maureen Marsh and Alison Fail after they beat Bev Millen's Supermarine.

A Wroughton foursome of June Corbett, Margaret Douthwaite, Carol Woodward and Babs Salter are also in the last eight after beating Highworth and Swindon.

Joining them will be the new Westlecot foursome of Jayne Croston, Kay Webb, Carole Coombs and Linda Whittingham who had a round one bye, before defeat Carol Walker's Supermarine.

WILTSHIRE Ladies, led by county president Mo Woolley (Alderbury), claimed another victory as they beat Cornwall at Tiverton West End 102-90 in their opening South West Counties League match.

The county took the honours on four of the six rinks to take 18 of the 22 points on offer – ten for the overall win and four twos for rink wins.

Top honours went to the foursome skipped by Rosemary Fitzpatrick (Chippenham Town) which included Wanborough’s Julia Hunt, who registered a 13 shots victory.

Purton’s Alison Fail claimed a five-shot win, while Wroughton’s Babs Salter saw her rink win by two show, however, Stratton Churchway’s Janet Willis was pipped on the last end dropping a single to lose 13-14.

Across the board Wiltshire were a shot adrift losing 22-21 at five ends but had moved ahead at ten leading 53-41and kept matters tight from this point of the contest.

They were 77-63 up at 15 ends, pulled back to 89-80 at 18 before finally recording a hard fought and wet 102-90 victory.

Wiltshire Ladies will play a friendly match at Highworth on Tuesday against Oxfordshire.

ROYAL WOOTTON BASSETT and Purton Ladies feature prominently in the Wiltshire Women’s teams chosen for the first national inter-county championship matches in the Walker Cup double rinks and Johns Trophy inter-county west group games.

Three from Bassett - Smith sisters Lucy and Katy plus Charlotte Daniell as well as Purton duo Chris Mitchell and Alison Fail are all selected for the Johns home tie at Devizes on June 3 against Dorset (1.30pm).

While the Purton duo of Mitchell and Fail and Bassett’s England U18 international Katy Smith are chosen also for the Walker Cup away double rinks match a week earlier versus Warwickshire at Welford-on-Avon on Sunday, May 28 (1.30pm).

WESTLECOT and Royal Wootton Bassett dominate the list of players named to take part in the final trial for the men’s Middleton Cup side, national inter-counties championship.

Wiltshire will face Hampshire in a full trial match this afternoon 2pm (Saturday) at Atherley BC, Southampton.

Between them both supply 14 of the 24 players chosen who are only drawn from seven clubs around the whole of Wiltshire.

Bassett’s septet are Gary and Craig Morphet, Mel Biggs, Chris Cheesley, Dave Godwin, Kevin Embling and Neil Smith (player/manager), Westlecot’s seven are: Mike Richards, Graham and Craig Hatherall, James Richman, Mike Jackson, Mike Titcombe Jnr and Ian Jefferies.
