WALCOT boxer Patrick McDonagh will take another step towards a third national title when he competes in the Junior ABA quarter-finals in Chelmsford tomorrow, writes DAVE VEYSEY.

In a class four (63kg) match he meets the champion of the Eastern Counties, Perce Baxter, from the March ABC in Cambridgshire.

McDonagh defeated Martin Pirret from Downend ABC in Bristol to win the Western Counties title, and then beat Home Counties champion Lee McGrath of the Luton Academy in the next round.

The talented 16-year-old southpaw is among the favourites to win the title, but is taking one fight at a time.

He said: “I don’t know much about Baxter, but he’s the Eastern Counties champion so I won’t be underestimating him.

“It doesn’t pay to look too far ahead when you’re in the ABAs, it’s best to concentrate on your next opponent.

“I train hard in the gym and I know I am ready for three tough rounds.”

Coach Harry Scott added: “Patrick is a good boxer who trains regularly and is fit and ready to do himself justice in the ring.

“These championship bouts are never easy, but I hope he will do well.”

The action starts at 1.30pm on Saturday at the Marconi Club in Chelmsford, Essex.
