JAMIE Cox is planning to make his return to the ring this autumn with his eyes firmly set on earning a shot at the British title.

But the former Commonwealth light-middleweight champion, who will lose his ranking on Monday due to being inactive for a year, will have a fight in September first.

The undefeated southpaw, who spoke to the Advertiser at Kelvin Young’s successful title on Saturday night, says that he will be fighting under Frank Warren once again and his next opponent is likely to be Ronnie Heffron.

But before any deal can be signed for that contest, Swindon’s 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist must wait for Heffron to face Liam Williams at the Phones4U Arena on July 26.

“I’m going to be fighting in September,” Cox said. “There are whispers that it will be Ronnie Heffron, so I’ve got to wait and see what comes out the bag with that.

“I had an opportunity to fight next month in America, but I’m going on holiday to Turkey this week and I wouldn’t have had enough time to prepare for a big show like that - I don’t want to risk it for four weeks notice.

“Frank Warren is very interested again in doing something, but I leave that to my manager Lee Beard.”

While Cox is still to re-sign with his former promoter, he hopes that the fact his has only had one fight in almost three years will help him make more of a statement when he does return.

“It can be a good thing if you get forgotten, you can then make a bigger impact,” he said. “If I beat Ronnie then I’m back in the mix - hopefully I’ll be looking for a British title straight away.”

Cox acrimoniously split from Warren in 2012 after he rejected a new deal following a row over money.

But the 27-year-old says that he is happy to work with the promoter that led him to the Commonwealth title again.

“You need one of the biggest promoters so that you can concentrate on your career,” he said. “He (Warren) is a big promoter - one of the biggest ones in this country “I would imagine that (the Heffron fight) would be at the Copper Box, but it is up to Frank.

“If Frank makes that fight happen then it is where he wants it.”
