Last weekend was a busy one for Walcot ABC, with boxers in action at events in Bournemouth and Mangotsfield, writes Dave Veysey.

On Friday night, Bill Harris encountered Baily Hibbs from the host club, Bournemouth ABC, over three one-and-a-half-minute rounds.

The two 11-year-olds weighed in at only 31kgs, but they put on a terrific show in Bournemouth.

Roared on by his home support, Hibbs made the faster start, scoring with jabs and straight rights to take the opener.

Harris raised his game in the second stanza and landed with fast left jabs and straight jabs to level matters at one round apiece.

It was all to play for during the final session, and both went at it hammer and tong.

A huge ovation from the crowd followed the final bell, where the Walcot boxer was awarded a unanimous points victory.

However there was disappointment for clubmate Fred Bond, also 11, who tasted defeat for the first time after duelling with Lloyd Farringdon from Hampshire-based club Team Wiseman.

Farringdon was quick out of the blocks, and although many of his punches missed their intended target, enough landed for him to hold the upperhand over the first two rounds.

Bond battled back bravely during the final round to score with several left jabs, but the Hampshire boxer took an unanimous points decision at the final bell’.

Meanwhile, on Sunday 13-year-old Mikey McDonagh represented the Western Counties in a team match with the North West Region.

He faced the more experienced Joe McGuiness from Manchester, and from the opening bell the Mancunian attacked with combinations of punches to win the opening session.

Despite injuring his left arm during the early exchanges, McDonagh scored with some fast shots of his own to take the second round, and after a tight last period McGuiness was awarded victory by a split points’ decision – two judges to one.
