EAMONN O’Kane insists that his sole focus tonight will be Tureano Johnson, despite fighting at the Mecca of boxing for a chance to box for a world middleweight title.

The Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained fighter faces the Bahamian at Madison Square Garden on the undercard of Gennady Golovkin’s IBF/WBA/IBO and interim WBC world title fight against David Lemieux, with the winner becoming the IBF number one and mandatory challenger to the victor of the main event.

The 33-year-old has spent the majority of his training camp in California with Ferndale Road-based trainer Fitzpatrick and says that he will not get overawed by the occasion in the Big Apple.

“Everyone dreams about (fighting at Madison Square Garden),” O’Kane told the Advertiser. “I have dreamed about fighting there since I was six.

“But to me it is a boxing ring, that is my focus and doing a good job on Tureano Johnson. Afterwards we will look back at the pictures and videos. After 12 rows who can you see?”

Even the prospect of facing one of boxing’s biggest pound-for-pound stars is not daunting the Northern Irishman.

“You want to fight the best of your division. Tureano Johnson is ranked two by the WBO and four with the IBF and I’m number three with the IBF,” O’Kane said.

“This is definitely good to be mixing it with the best and the winner gets one of two world champions - I can’t wait to get the winner.”

O’Kane’s training camp has been a long one. He spent two months with George Groves at Big Bear preparing for his failed world title bid against Badou Jack last month, but the former 2010 Commonwealth Games gold medallist dismisses any suggestion he will be overdone.

“I’m always trying to come to the boil - that is the way I have always done it,” O’Kane said.
