FRANK Warren has promised to deliver Jamie Cox a world title shot in 2016.

The Swindon southpaw, who has now won all 20 of his professional contests, took another step towards global honours on Saturday night as he ruthlessly crushed Hungarian Ferenc Albert in 68 seconds to successfully defend his WBO European super-middleweight title.

While his promoter Warren has said that he will first try and push for the 29-year-old to become mandatory to face new British champion Callum Smith, he would fancy the 2006 Commonwealth Games gold medallist against any of the 12 stone world champions.

“I will make sure that Jamie Cox fights for a world title next year,” Warren told the Advertiser.

“If could I would make the (IBF champion) James DeGale fight in a heartbeat – I really do fancy him against DeGale (who defends his title against Lucian Bute later this month).

“Callum Smith, George Groves, I would be very confident in putting Jamie in there with them and I fancy him to knock them over.

“But first I will have to get Jamie into that position (of fighting for a world title).”

With the British Boxing Board of Control meeting this week, Warren says that he will be speaking to them about Cox and the Lonsdale belt.

“I will be lobbying the Board for a fight with Callum Smith,” the promoter added.

“It would be a great fight. They are both undefeated, they have great amateur pedigree – it would be a great domestic fight.”

While Warren admits that Cox’s level of opponents have not been what he would like for the Swindon knockout artist, who made it three stoppage wins in 2015 on Saturday, he is pleased that he is now starting to live up to his potential.

“Jamie may not have had much time in the ring this year, but what has impressed me is the way he has gone about it,” the International Hall of Fame promoter said.

“He has been very professional and we are moving him towards that position where he will be fighting for a world title.

“We offered the Eubanks the fight. I spoke to (Chris Jr’s) trainer Adam Booth and his father (Chris Snr) and they did not want it.

“Jamie is ranked with the WBO so there is that route for him. The WBA have ordered a mandatory for Fedor Chudinov, so if he comes through that one that is another option.

“But I will make sure Jamie fights for a world title next year.”
