KELLY Morgan has set her sights on Germany’s WBC super-middleweight champion Nikki Adler after defeating world number two middleweight Szilvia Szabados.

The Swindon-based 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist, in just her third professional fight, stunned her Hungarian opponent – ranked second in the world by the Women's International Boxing Association (WIBA) - at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre on Sunday night, taking a 59-55 decision.

And while the former England netball international admits she would like at least one more fight before any world title shot, Morgan, who also wants to become a world middleweight champion as well, says she would not shy away should the opportunity arise.

“I definitely want that super-middleweight title first,” Morgan told the Advertiser. “We have seen footage of Nikki Adler (who successfully defended her title against Szabados in July) and I’m sure we can formulate a plan to get that belt.

“I think I need another fight first - hopefully a European title fight or some sort of title - because there are still things for me to work on, but if the opportunity came our way, then we will take it.”

Having searched for the best part of five months to find footage of Sunday’s opponent, Morgan and her trainer Richard Farnan finally got their hands of some of Szabados’ fights last Thursday.

And while there was little time for the pair to work out a game plan, the former ABA runner-up said that she felt confident that the win would come.

“We knew that she had a way of fighting,” Morgan said. “We knew that she wouldn’t change that.

“So once we got that figured out, I was confident from the first round that I’d win.

“But full respect to Szilvia. She has a granite chin – I hit her with some big, big shots.

“It is all still sinking in. I didn’t sleep on Sunday night because I was so excited by the win. I’m just on cloud nine.”

Morgan’s trainer Farnan is hoping that Swindon fight fans will continue to come out in force to support Morgan.

“A lot of peoples’ eyes were opened by Kelly’s performance,” Farnan said. “She just couldn’t miss Szilvia.

“From about the fourth round, I was grinning like a Chesire Cat because I knew that she was winning comfortably.

“Like Kelly, I want her to have one more fight.

“Szilvia said afterwards that, yes Kelly still has things to work on, but she is ready for Nikki Adler.”
