WALCOT ABC boxer Said Eltuyev sailed through the opening round of the National Youth Championships with an ultimately-convincing points’ win in Cheltenham last Thursday, writes DAVE VEYSEY.
Ewan Jenkins, from the Empire Club in Bristol, provided the Walcot boxer with a good workout, bringing an impressive fight record of 12 wins from 16 contests to the occasion.
The talented 17-year-olds attacked from the opening bell, with both boxers enjoying some success.
However, as the round progressed, Eltuyev slipped many of the Bristolian’s shots and then scored on the counter with his effective left hook.
The second session saw the Eltuyev step up his work-rate and, after a solid combination of left hooks and straight rights, Jenkins was handeded a standing count by referee Mike Hemming.
The final three minutes provided great entertainment as Jenkins bravely kept coming forward, with the Walcot boxer picking him off on the counter.
Eltuyev was awarded a unanimous points’ decision by the ringside judges.
“Said followed my instructions perfectly and put on an impressive display of boxing on the counter," said Walcot coach Lionel McCrea.
“His punches were crisp and effective and his fitness was good. But credit must be given to his opponent, who never stopped coming forward.’’
