KELVIN Young insists he will not freeze in front of the Sky Sports cameras on Saturday night as he makes his television debut.

The Penhill pugilist heads to London today to begin the final preparations for his English super-middleweight title final eliminator against former Premier League footballer Leon McKenzie.

The 28-year-old admits that he is going to have to roll back time to put himself back in the mix at the Copper Box Arena.

While Young went through 2015 undefeated, two draws against durable journeymen Joe Walsh and Kieron Gray at light-heavyweight left him wondering if the big fights would return.

However, the former IBO super-middleweight inter-continental and Southern Area champion saw contests with English champion Jahmaine Smyle and Southern Area belt holder Darryll Williams fall through.

But then, Young got his chance against 37-year-old McKenzie, whose uncle Duke was a three-weight world champion.

“The last year, I haven’t been performing to how I know that I can and what I am capable of, but as soon as the call came in for this fight, the hunger was there,” Young told the Advertiser. “These are the type of fights that I want. I want the big fights, I want to test myself.

“I have got full respect for Leon McKenzie. He is getting on a bit so he knows that he has got to start making his moves.

“He is coming off a good win over John McCallum in a British title eliminator. I’m looking forward to it.”

Before Young steps into the ring on Saturday, there is a final press conference in London this afternoon before the big fight weigh-in on Friday.

“I’m exciting by it all – I’m buzzing,” he said. “We’ve got the final press conference on the Thursday, then the weigh-in on Friday and fight the Saturday.

“I’m going to enjoy it and take it in my stride, but I’m not going to freeze.

“There are a few nerves, the ones that keep you on edge in the build to fight night, but I’m going out there to put in my best performance – I’m excited.”
