KELVIN Young will be looking to steal the show tonight as he makes his television debut.

The Penhill pugilist faces former Premier League footballer Leon McKenzie this evening in an English super-middleweight title final eliminator.

The bout is also the last fight on Sky Sports’ live broadcast from the Copper Box Arena.

Young, who has been in London since Thursday, is looking to climb back up the domestic 12-stone rankings with victory over his ex-footballer opponent, who goes into the contest as the odds-on favourite.

However, the 28-year-old former IBO inter-continental and Southern Area champion is hoping that his experience of 17 wins from 23 contests, compared to McKenzie’s eight bouts, will hold the key as he prepares for the most high-profile outing of his career.

“This is everything I have dreamt about since I turned pro,” Young told the Advertiser.

“This has been a long time coming. I turned pro in 2009, so I have got bags of experience.

“I’m ready for the big stage (on a Sky Sports show).

“This is an English title final eliminator, so the reward for the winner is huge.

“May the best man win and I’m ready to do that.”

Orthodox Young, who is making his first appearance at super-middleweight since June 2014, says that he has been fully focused on his preparations for 37-year-old southpaw McKenzie.

“The camp has been spot on. I have been training hard since November - I’m ready,”said Young Gun, who weighed in yesterday at 11st 13lbs 7 oz, while McKenzie tipped the scales at 11st 12lbs 5oz.

“I lived the life over Christmas. I have had some great sparring in Newport and Bristol; everything has been going brilliantly.

“I have sparred only southpaws. Normally, I don’t get specific sparring for my fights, but this time I have.

“Tony Borg (trainer to IBF featherweight world champion Lee Selby) has been giving me plenty of pointers and he says that he has seen massive improvements from the first spar to the last.

“I have been really comfortable (getting back down to super-middleweight). I have been living the life to ensure that I will make the weight.”

Young’s fight will be shown live on Sky Sports 1, with his ring walk not expected any earlier than 10pm.
