KELLY Morgan could defend her WBC Silver middleweight title in California next month.

The 2002 Commonwealth Games javelin bronze medallist is being lined up to fight on a show co-promoted by boxing Hall of Famer Roy Jones Jr against Maricela Cornejo, who lost a split points decision against Kali Reis in April for the vacant world title.

Morgan’s trainer and manager Richard Farnan told the Advertiser that he hopes to have the fight confirmed by the end of the week, with his fighter already back in training.

The 36-year-old, who claimed her belt last month with a unanimous points win over Lisa Cielas at the Grange Drive Leisure Centre, would also find her fight at the Perchanga Resort and Casino in Temecula, California, on August 5 aired on American television, with CBS Sports Network scheduled to broadcast the show.

“The WBC emailed me to ask if we would be interested in fighting in Mexico sometime in August,” Farnan said. “We liked the idea and we got talking and this fight has come up.

“We are in negotiations at the moment and hopefully it should be sorted out in the next week.

“But, if they think we are sitting around waiting for the fight to be confirmed they have got another thing coming as Kelly was back in training a week after the Lisa fight.

“This could be a huge opportunity, it is massive just for the experience.

“I have got footage of the world title against Kali Reis and I firmly believe Kelly has got too much for both of them.

“After watching that fight I believe that Lisa and (Szilivia) Szabados were tougher opponents.”

With Morgan on the cusp of making her American debut, Farnan said that the former England netball international may have to wait until April next year for her world title opportunity.

“Kali has got until April before she has to fulfil her mandatory fight against Kelly,” Farnan said.

“She has got a fight in a couple of weeks (a non-title contest on July 15 against Amika Stocks).

“What happens after that I don’t know. If Kelly wins in August then I’ll be pushing to try and get that fight by the end of the year.”
