KELVIN Young is looking to create history tonight and become Swindon’s first two-weight Southern Area champion.

Having won the belt at super-middleweight back in 2012, out-pointing Martin Robins, the Penhill pugilist joined Ricky Porter and Pete Neal as fighters from the town to win a Southern Area belt - Lawrence Bennett would follow in 2014.

However, should the 29-year-old defeat Jack Morris at the York Hall this evening he would create a piece of Swindon fighting history.

“If I beat Jack Morris then I will be the first two-weight Southern Area champion from Swindon,” Young told the Advertiser.

“Ricky Porter, Pete Neal and Lawrence Bennett have all won a title at one weight but no-one has done it at two.

“Knowing that I could create history has given me that extra spring in my step.”

As well as hoping to become a two-weight Southern Area champion, Young is also looking to prove his doubters wrong.

In the summer of 2014, the then IBO inter-continental super-middleweight title holder showed the heart of a champion as he climbed off the canvas to win a brutal war with Francis Tchoffo and successfully defend his belt.

However, since that gruelling night, Young has struggled to rediscover that form.

In his fights that followed, Young suffered a shock defeat to Kiril Psonko – a loss that would see him stripped of his IBO crown - a draw and a win with journeyman Joe Walsh, another draw with Kieron Gray before being stopped in 43 seconds by former Premier League footballer Leon McKenzie live on Sky Sports.

Following his final loss, Young contemplated his future in boxing before bouncing back to beat Chris Hobbs in Portsmouth to set up this evening’s bout.

“This is the best camp I have had for a long, long time,” Young said. “Being at light-heavy is definitely suiting me.

“Before the Leon McKenzie fight I hadn’t been down at 12 stone since the Francis Tchoffo fight.

“I also haven’t had a settled trainer since Rich (Farnan). I spent some of that time training myself because Joe (Wrona) had to work away a lot.

“I’m now working with Liam Wilkins down in Devizes and that has been fantastic.

“I have now got a new team around me and I’m feeling great.

“On Saturday, I’m going to prove a lot of people wrong – people have been writing me off.”

Young’s bout for the vacant Southern Area title is one of 19 fights which also includes unbeaten Swindon cruiserweight Luke Watkins, Paddy Fitzpatrick-trained Sam Smith – who is gunning for the loser of the Morris-Young fight - as well as Swindon-based Moroccan heavyweight Noureddine Meddoun.
