KELVIN Young’s dream of becoming the first two-weight Southern Area champion from Swindon was cruelly ended on Saturday night.

The Penhill pugilist, who had joined forces with Devizes trainer Liam Wilkins for this fight, faced Jack Morris for the vacant light-heavyweight belt.

The former Southern Area super-middleweight champion, according to his trainer, was in control of the 10-round contest before the Margate fighter caught Young and referee Ian John Lewis stopped the bout.

Young, who suffered his sixth defeat in 26 bouts, said on Facebook after the fight: “Gutted, got caught with a good shot in the last round!

“I was absolutely fine! Had the fight won! Absolutely gutted!”

His trainer Wilkins added on Facebook: “I have to say that Kelvin Young has just put on the performance of his life.

“He has just boxed a real top kid, controlled the pace and boxed beautifully off of his jab from the centre of the ring.

“Winning the fight, then gone into the last round and, with one minute left, he took one shot and the referee has just called the fight, whilst Kelv was throwing back, not even out.

“We are not sore losers, so fair play to Jack Morris. We’ve had an amazing camp, and in only nine weeks together, Kelv has just performed like that. I am so proud of him, this man is quality.

“Hopefully Morris does justice, and grants us the rematch that is deserved.”

Meanwhile, Swindon-based Moroccan heavyweight Noureddine Meddoun’s return to the ring after an absence of four years ended in a points defeat to Kamil Sokolowski.
