KELVIN Young is determined to end his career on a high after announcing his fight with Sam Couzens next month will be his last hurrah.

The 29-year-old former IBO inter-continental super-middleweight champion has made the decision to hang up his gloves after one more fight following his brutal second round stoppage defeat to David Brophy at the weekend.

Young, who has won five titles in a professional career that has spanned seven years, says that he is not prepared to be ‘a punch bag for anybody’.

Following the tragic death of Dundee boxer Mike Towell at the weekend, the Penhill pugilist has taken stock of his life after the seventh defeat of his 27-fight career.

“I’ve got three young kids at home and I’m not performing like I used to,” the former Southern Area champion told the Advertiser.

“When you are not performing like you used to you know it is time to finish.

“You only have to look at what happened to Mike, god rest him, and I’m not prepared to be a punch bag for anybody.

“I’m having one last fight, and it will be a great way to end my career with a win over Sam Couzens.”

Young says that when he meets Couzens at the Oasis Leisure Centre on November 26, that he will be in fine shape after admitting to feeling the pace against Brophy.

“There are no excuses for the Brophy fight – I got beat by the better man,” Young said. “I was feeling the pace from early on.

“I had four weeks notice for that fight and I wasn’t in shape. I’m now on the weight that I need to be for the Sam Couzens fight and I’ve got an eight week camp ahead of me.

“Sam and me have always had a great rivalry, we bring the best out of each other and we will be mates for life after November 26.”
