Cirencester ABC traveled to Barton Hill in Bristol last Saturday where 11 year old Sammy Varey was up against Imraan Shirazi, from Peterborough Police ABC.

Both boys had identical records but from the first bell it was Varey who dictated the pace, boxing up on his toes catching his opponent with clean punches.

That remained the pattern throughout all three rounds, with Varey winning on a unanimous points decision.

Cirencester boxers also traveled to Essex for the quarter finals of the Cadet and Junior Championships, where Johnny Varey (46kg), who held a record of 21 wins from 26 bouts was up against Levi Bellfield, from Hockley ABC.

Varey controlled the pace in every round, catching his opponent with flurries of combination punches against a much taller opponent.

Bellfield had no answer to the Cirencester fighter’s work rate and could not deal with Varey’s onslaught of lightning-speed combination punches, with Varey winning on a unanimous points decision.

Varey now competes in the semi-finals on Saturday, again in Essex.

Cirencester coach Simon Knowles said: “Both boys put in an outstanding performance over the weekend.

“Sammy beat a very good boy with a record of six wins and two losses.

“Johnny boxed the best I’ve ever seen him box. He’s a brilliant little prospect.’’
